Last night we celebrated Greta's first birthday, something I have been a bit cynical about prior to the event. A party for a one year old, give me a break. I really had to come to terms with the idea that this party was actually important; not just for Greta, but for the Aunts, Uncles, Grandmas, Nanas, Grandpas, Parents, Friends and loved ones. A one year old obviously does not have the mental framework and wherewithal to really understand this confusing and overly stimulating rite of passage. But obviously that is not what this is all about for a baby. I'll get to that at the end...
My cynical predisposition shifted to a proud daddy when after the candles were lit upon the cake and everyone sang the Birthday song, Greta looked around the room and with a big smile gave everyone a round of applause. When asked, "How old is Greta?" she promptly raised one finger above her head and with that big toothy grin affirmed that she knew what this was all about.
The party was a success and I trust that everyone had as good a time. I really appreciate everyone who came to show Greta that she has the support and love of a bunch of really great people. That is what it is all about!
