The following is a pretty big list of fun and free things to do with the little ones...
Como Zoo
Founded in 1897, Como Zoo is a well-known and loved zoo with 36 different types of animals. Visitors are able to get fairly close to the animals making the zoo experience exceptionally fun and exciting for kids. My family enjoys all of the zoo animals but our favorites are the polar bear that swims laps in his pool during the summer, the monkeys (includes lemurs, spider monkeys, gorillas, and orangutan), and “Sparky” the California Sea Lion show.
Admission to the zoo is free, however with recent budget cuts there is a recommended admission donation of $1 for adults and $.50 for children.

Soft Play Area at Eden Prairie Center
For all of you south-suburbanites, check out the soft foam play area at Eden Prairie Center! It's located on the lower level near Kohl's and has a Minnesota living theme. Some of the play structures include a snowmobile, tent, hills, jet ski, and more. It has a nice balance of taller climbing structures for the preschool crowd and lower structures for the younger tots. It's a great way to enjoy Minnesota living without any pesky mosquitoes!

Soft Play Area at Northtown Mall
Northtown mall has two play areas for you and your kids to enjoy.
The first is the Children's Soft Play Area located near Applebee's restaurant (on the end of the mall where the Ward's department store used to be). Some of the breakfast theme play structures include a big bowl of cereal, waffles, sliced bananas, and more. This play area is large but most of the structures are not all that tall. The bowl of cereal is a good one for the kids who like to climb. The other structures are fun for jumping. Kids will love jumping from one waffle to the next and one banana slice to the next. They'll burn off so much energy they'll need a second breakfast! This play area is really good for young ones who are crawling and starting to walk because most of the structures are low to the ground.
The second play area is the Radio Disney Play House. This is a large room located near Best Buy where kids can listen to Disney music and play in a castle, rock in see-saw type boats, shoot some hoops, and play with a variety of toys like xylophones and blocks. It's a fun place to check out, but my 3 year old prefers the foam breakfast play area by far.

Soft Play Area at Rosedale Center
Looking for something fun to do indoors on a rainy or snowy day? Load the kids in the car and take them to Rosedale Center. Yep, the mall. There's even covered parking by Marshall Field's so you can go from your garage into the mall without getting wet!
The Northwoods Play area, located in Herberger's Court, will keep the kids entertained and let them burn off some energy by climbing on woodsy foam play structures. Some of the play structures include a tree with slides and a crawl-through trunk, a big tent to crawl through (and the bigger kids climb on top of it!), a lady bug, a hollow log, and more!
My opinion is that this play area is best for tots who are walking and the preschool kids. It has bigger, taller structures than play areas at other Twin Cities malls but the overall area is a bit smaller. If your children love to climb, this play area is for you!
